I see a kind of negative of the Cheshire Cat. In the case of the Cheshire Cat, the smile remains in place after the creature disappears, but in this case the creature (the girl) remains while her smile disappears! Though it's quite sad, it seems to be all too true that in life many people seem to live on long after their smiles have vanished... With the Cheshire Cat, the cat often came back to rejoin his smile. But I think it's a much rarer event for a vanished smile to rejoin its owner...
